I mostly agree with the first review of this lens in terms of optical performance. It's sharp corner to corner over the entire focal length range and vignettes less (if at all) than any other zoom lens I have used. Images are nearly as punchy and brilliant as those produced by good quality prime lenses, a fact that can be clearly seen on the camera's monitor without magnification.
But I don't like this lens and never use it. It's Looooong, heavy, and awkward to use. Worse yet, the zoom range is just too short for my purposes. While 24mm is wide enough for most uses, I find the 70mm barrier to be a royal pain in the rump. I found myself constantly agonizing between "making do" at 70mm, or going through the hassle of changing lenses just to take a shot at 83 or 97mm. If this lens just went past 100mm or so, I could put up with it's weight, length, and poor ballance. But it doesn't, so an otherwise fine chunk of optical engineering is simply used as a very expensive paperweight.
My "go to" lens is the Nilon 24-120mm f4. It's nearly as long and heavy, but strangely, I find it far more comfortable to use. Except for a tendancy for corners to darken, optical performance is comparable to the 24-70, and of course I now need to change lenses far less often.
Pros: Beautiful Colors/Contrast, Good Low-Light Performance
Cons: a long and heavy lens with very limited zoom range

I had rented this lens before and took the plunge to make the purchase it when I found a store that had it available. The clarity and sharpness of this lens is superb to anything that I have shot before on Nikon. Autofocus is fast and accurate without adjusting. Dead-on precision.
The range of this lens affords me the opportunity to use this lens as an everyday lens. Unless I am shooting sports from a distance, this lens covers 95% of what I need.
Image detail is superb and leaves me in awe as I am a pixel pepper and find that the detail level at 100% crop is phenomenal.
The fast 2.8, allows me to capture more in low light scenarios and when coupled with the SB700, I don't think there is much that this lens can't capture that I am wanting to capture.
I will rigorously put this lens through the tasks and fully expect it to outlast several camera bodies. So far it has been to several races and multiple shoots and although a bit heavier than a smaller prime, the advantage being that it is weather sealed and since i do not have to switch lenses, i have had to clean my sensor much less than before.
I am ranting. Suffice it to say, WOW. I wish they all could be this impressive in every regard.
